You need more than just water and soap to clean and disinfect your dirty mobile cell handphone. Most of our mobile phones, be it iPhones, Samsung or other Android phones (or even the latest Huawei phones) are not waterproof and you can’t rinse it with water and soap. You want your phone to be free of COVID-19 and other viruses. And most of us are not even aware of how dirty our mobile phones are, and we use it daily. A mobile phone is probably the first thing we touch when we wake up, and the last thing we handle when we sleep. And we bring our phones often to our faces, transmitting viruses, bacteria, and germs to our face and causing us to be sick. You want to thoroughly disinfect your mobile phone with a good strong antiseptic disinfectant.

How dirty is a mobile cell phone?

Our phone is very dirty and full of viruses and bacteria. Experts have conducted tests and found your phone to be covered in germs, 25,127 bacteria per square inch. This means our mobile handphones can be dirtier than a toilet seat. YUCKS.

  1. Mobile cellphone – 25,127 bacteria per square inch
  2. Toilet seat: 1,201 bacteria per square inch
  3. Kitchen table counter: 1,736 bacteria per square inch
  4. Pet food dish: 2,110 bacteria per square inch
  5. Checkout screen: 4,500 bacteria per square inch
  6. Doorknob: 8,643 bacteria per square inch

Furthermore, a recent study has found that coronavirus can survive on smooth glass and metal for up to nine days. NINE DAYS. That is more than ample time to spread sickness to your family, friends, and yourself. And all of us have 1 or even 2 mobile phones that we touch daily.

Can I get sick from my phone or tablet?

Yes, because we use our phone so often and it is one of the first things we touch when we reach the office or home. We use our phone often when we are on public transit too, be it Uber, taxi, trains or buses, and also when we are driving our own cars. While contacting door handles, railings, lift buttons, we may have passed the viruses onto our phones or tablets where it can survive for hours. You can get sick from your iPhone, Samsung android phone, or even your iPad, Galaxy Android tablets, etc.

How often should you clean and disinfect your mobile phone?

You should clean your phone at least once a day. If you use your handphone often, especially during meal times, you should disinfect it twice or thrice a day. I personally clean my phone twice a day, once when I stepped into my office and once when I reached home. If you use a plastic or rubber phone cover, do clean the phone cover too as bacteria cling on to your rubber or plastic cover more than the metal or glass material of your phone. Phone covers usually have raised or protruding edges that bacteria thrive in so please spray or rub disinfectant over them too. Every day when I first reach my office and home, I will clean my phone and my shoes’ soles with antiseptic disinfectants.

Can you clean your phone with hand sanitizer or disinfectant?

Yes but please do not use excessive sanitizer as too much sanitizer may be too thick and leaks into the phone before being allowed to dry off into the environment. You can use a good antiseptic disinfectant for your phone. You may prefer to switch off your cell phone before spraying your surface sanitizer. Just a small drop or spray of disinfectant surface sanitizer on the phone will be ideal.

Can I clean my phone or tablet with a UV light-emitting machine?

No, UV light cannot kill viruses or germs thoroughly. UV light-emitting equipment has failed scientific studies that compared the level of bacteria and COVID-19 virus before and after using UV lights. The current power level is insufficient. Stick to using alcohol wet wipes or disinfectant sanitizers to clean your mobile phones and tablets.

How do I clean and disinfect my handphone?

Here are some simple steps to cleaning and disinfecting your phone to be clean of viruses and bacteria.

8 Steps on how to clean and disinfect your mobile phone.

  1. Wash your hands first with soap and water, or hand sanitizer
  2. Switch off your phone.
  3. Unplug all cables and earpieces out (to clean separately)
  4. Take out your phone cases to clean separately too.
  5. Use a microfiber cloth if possible, if not use wet wipes or tissues.
  6. Use a small amount of surface sanitizer or spray a small amount on the phone
  7. Rub, clean, and disinfect the phone.
  8. Leave it to dry before putting the phone case back.

If you are in a rush, just use a surface sanitizer spray (we recommend X70 Sterile-X antiseptic disinfectant surface sanitizer spray) to spray lightly on the whole phone and wipe it dry. This will probably take less than 10 seconds and keep your mobile phone clean and sanitized of germs or coronavirus. Or you can use simple hand sanitizer spray (they are gentle on your skin and the sterilization lasts shorter).
