Glucerna milk by Abbott Nutrition is designed as a milk supplement that is lactose-free and gluten-free. It is ideal for normal adults to drink as supplements and as well for diabetes and pre-diabetes patients because it has low sugar.

There are 3 different versions of Glucerna available.

  1. Triple Care powder (in 850g or 400g tin cans)
  2. Ready-To-Drink Packs (230ml in tetra packs, cartons of 27)
  3. Liquid, in tin cans (250ml in tin cans, cartons of 24)

A common question we get asked by users and caretakers is: what are the key differences between the Glucerna Triple Care Powder, the Liquid version, and the Ready-To-Drink packets?

Nutrition for People with Diabetes

Glucerna’s range of products is all designed to provide complete and balanced nutrients to meet the needs of diabetes and pre-diabetes patients. It can be used as a meal replacement or in between meals as supplements.

Glucerna comes in two flavours

It is also tasty and the powder version comes in two flavors:- Vanilla and Wheat.

It contains slow-digesting carbohydrates which are slowly digested by the body. This will prevent an undesirable sudden rise in blood sugar levels after consumption that is not healthy for anyone. Instead, a slow-release helps the body to absorb and manage nutrients.

This supplement has a heart-healthy fat blend consisting of mono-saturated fatty acids, free of lactose and gluten. Abbott introduced the Liquid version first and gradually introduced the powder version as well as the tetra pack ready to drink version

What are the key differences between Glucerna Liquid with fibre, Triple Care Powder, and Ready-To-Drink packs?

Firstly, Glucerna Triple Care Powder and Triple Care Ready-To-Drink packs are very similar. You can refer to the comparison chart below to see that the nutrient value of these 3 drinks is quite similar, with only slight differences in calories, proteins, fat, carbohydrates, and fibre.

3 main differences between these 3 versions of Triple Care Powder, Liquid, and Ready-To-Drink

  1. Convenience: The RTD and Liquid can be drunk directly while the powder version needs to mix into drinks
  2. Nutrient value: There are slight differences in calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, and fiber that may matter to some patients.
  3. Costs: The powder version is the most affordable for all.

The biggest difference is that Glucerna Triple Care Ready-To-Drink comes in RTD packs and you can drink it directly from the packet. It is more convenient than Triple Care Powder (850g). You would have to mix the powder with water before drinking. The powder would offer some cost savings compared to the RTD packets.

Hence the main differences between Triple Care powder, Liquid, and RTD packs are slight.

Glucerna Liquid has a little more calories, fats, and carbohydrates than Triple Care. It also contains slightly less protein than Triple Care.

Caretakers have feedback that they found the greatest advantage of Liquid is that it is ready to drink from the can, and contains more fiber, and is also more affordable than Triple Care Ready-To-Drink Tetrapack. Users also found mixing the powder into drinks the most cost-effective for themselves and family.

Hospitals and community care centres mostly use powder and Liquid as they are the most affordable and value-for-money staple.
